Pfleiderer launches ReSource Scheme

Did you know that Pfleiderer has launched a new sustainability initiative? Their new ReSource scheme helps them use more recycled products within their chipboard production. This process enables them to recycle wood multiple times, and minimises their footprint on forest ecosystems and the natural world.

Germany produces about eight million tonnes of wood waste each year. Over 50% of this wood is deemed recyclable. Pfleiderer’s ReSource scheme plans to save wood waste from going to landfill. This will mean less trees need felling to product wood products. It also means that this repurposed wood continues to hold carbon removed from the atmosphere.

How does ReSource work?

The process is simple, but very effective. Recycling partners across Germany work with Pfleiderer, and grade incoming wood waste. All wood waste falls into one of four categories (1-4). Category 1 Products (the highest category) consists of the most natural and purest wood waste products. This wood is free of harmful chemicals or organohalogen compounds. Waste wood in this category is suitable for recycling into chipboard. Category 4 Products (the lowest category) are the most impure wood waste products. Glue, paint or organohalogen chemical compounds are likely present. Waste products in the lower categories are not suitable for recycling.

Pfleiderer is striving to use more and more category 1 and 2 products within their chipboard production. In 2020, Pfleiderer processed 700,000 tonnes of pre-used wood material. Recycled woodchips now make up roughly 60% of each Pfleiderer chipboard panel.
