Riga Wood: Change from FSC® to PEFC

Our long standing supply partner, Riga Wood (the product brand of Latvijas Finieris), has transitioned its primary forest certification system from FSC® (FSC-C002826) (Forest Stewardship Council)  to PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).

This change affects the certification under which Riga Wood birch plywood is produced and supplied. We believe it is important to communicate this update clearly and transparently, so that our customers understand what it means in practice. While the way you purchase these products from us will not change, the certification documentation you receive will reflect PEFC rather than FSC.

Why has Latvijas Finieris moved to PEFC?

PEFC is the predominant forest certification system across Latvia and the wider Baltic region. As such, Latvijas Finieris has aligned its certification with PEFC to reflect the structure of national forest management systems in its sourcing area. In addition, there have been ongoing structural challenges within the FSC framework in the region. This includes the absence of a fully endorsed national FSC forest management standard in Latvia.

By transitioning to PEFC, Latvijas Finieris continues to provide robust assurance of:

  • Legal sourcing
  • Full supply chain traceability
  • Responsible forest management

All timber used will continue to originate within the EU and meet PEFC requirements, alongside controlled sourcing criteria where applicable.

What does this mean for our customers?

From January 2026, Riga Wood birch plywood will be supplied under PEFC certification.

  • Any remaining FSC-certified stock will be clearly identified and responsibly phased out
  • Product quality, performance, and technical specifications remain unchanged
  • All deliveries will be accompanied by updated PEFC certification documentation

This change does not impact the legality, sustainability, or traceability of the material.
